This is an upscale and beautifully designed Mexican restaurant run by owners of The Blue Shrimp. Choice of indoor A/C or outside terraced garden seating with electric lantern lit trees and an altar of Mayan style ceramics. We climbed the outside stairs and love the candelarias placed in paper bags on various welcoming steps. At the top was a lovely hostess dressed in white and she greeted us warmly, then took us to our interior reserved table. Huge glass doors separate this area from the exterior garden dining areas. The menu is extensive and features many old Mexican dishes and quite a number moles. We were offered a ramekin of each mole with sliced bread to sample before choosing which creation to sample.
First, we shared grilled panela cheese with mild chipotle accompanied by housemade tortillas for wrapping. It went marvelously with the squash blossom quesadillas and lettuce salad with cactus and crispy sweet potatoes. What a step into old style Mexican dining.
For the mole, one guest chose chicken with Oaxacan mole, my suggestion since I had enjoyed it so much in the capital of this southern state. Chiapas and Guerrero versions were also tasted. Each regional sauce has its own mix of spices and herbs. A fish lover ordered the fresh grilled sea bass fillet in pulque sauce and topped with nopale and cactus flowers. The delicate flavors of the composition blended perfectly. We had to try the relleno stuffed with either crab or shrimp. It was laced with a corn cream sauce and accompanied by above the mean rice and beans.
Three desserts were chosen, one better than the previous. Cinnamon ice cream was creamy and rich, highlighting this indigenous spice. Tres leches [three milks] cake is a Mexican staple and here it was oozing with moisture and sweetness. Delightful. The winner was the chocolate cake decorated with guajillo chile sauce, slightly tangy, but worked well with the chocolate and sugar.
Courses were not rushed but we never wanted for anything, whether a fork, an extra plate or more water. This is service as one expects, in a delightfully beautiful and elegant locale.
